NASA's Voyager program
NASA launched Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 in 1977 to explore Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These two unmanned probes are the first to leave the solar system and navigate interstellar space, and are the farthest man-made objects ever sent.
Voyager 1 takes family photos of the solar system in 1990 from a distance of about 6 billion kilometers from Earth. This photo, in which the Earth appears as a single dot, is called the ‘Pale Blue Dot.’ Carl Sagan, who proposed this imaging, famously wrote the following:
In case Voyager was discovered by aliens, humanity's message was sent on a record. It contains greetings recorded in many languages around the world, various natural sounds such as waves, wind, whales, and birds, and music such as the Symphony of Destiny. It also contains 116 photos. If you would like to learn more about what sounds and images are included, please visit the link below.
